Reality of Namaz & its Hidden Aspects
In last session we saw the correct way of reciting namaz as shown by Imam Sadiq (a.s). Tonight, we would like to discuss about the reality of namaz and its hidden aspects so that we pay attention to it and we offer our namaz with humility (khuzoo) and humbleness (khushoo)
Today we will look at 5 points/aspects about the reality of namaz so that especially in this month – which is a month of worship and namaz – as well as in other months we pay attention to them.
1. Importance of namaz
In traditions, it has come that the one who wishes that Allah should speak to him then he should recite Quran. But if he wishes to speak to Allah then he should recite namaz. “The one who prays namaz is doing munajaat with Allah Thus a person must realise that namaz is Meraj of a believer since he is addressing Allah and, in this way, he should know the significance of namaz.
Abu Zar said to Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) “What is this namaz that you have ordered us to recite?” He (s.a.w.a) replied, “This is the best thing that I brought for you. Then one can recite more of it if he wishes. Or less of it if he wishes.”
Hence, we must realise that (praying of) namaz is the best order given by Allah.
In Nahjul Balagha, Ameerul Momineen (a.s) has compared namaz to a stream which is flowing near a person’s house and the person bathes in it five times a day. Will such a person have any filth upon him? Namaz too plays a similar role of purifying a person. As Quran as “Certainly, the good deeds washes away the sins.” (Surah Hud, v 114) Hence, we understand the great role of namaz in a person’s life.
Imam Sadiq (a.s) says, ”Nothing equals namaz in value after (Divine) Maarefat” Means after Tauheed, Wilayat etc no act of worship can come close to namaz. Hence, namaz should be given its due importance and not taken lightly
In other traditions, namaz has been compared to a tent-pole. The pole of tent bears the entire weight of the tent and is vital for the stability and solidity of the tent. Only if the pole is strong will the tent be beneficial. If the pole/pillar is weak then all other parts of the tents will be useless. Similarly, the acceptance of all other acts of religion are entirely dependent on the acceptance of the namaz.

2. Time of namaz
Namaz should be recited at Awwal Waqt (time of commencement) or at least at the time of it fazilat (greatness) and we should pay attention to this point

One of the wives of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) says that we were busy talking to each other. But as soon as the time of namaz arrived (Azan was heard) he (s.a.w.a) got up immediately as if we did not know each other and he began to offer his namaz.

Imam Reza (a.s) was having a debate with Imran Sa’abi and the debate stretched on for long. Suddenly the voice of the muezzin was heard. Immediately, Imam (a.s) stopped the discussion and said, “We will first recite the namaz and then come back to our discussion.” This shows that nothing is more important than namaz.

In Surah Maoon, Allah says, ”So woe to the praying ones. Who are unmindful of their prayers” (Surah Ma’oon, v 4, 5) It refers to those people who – when the time of namaz arrives – do not leave their other (worldly) works and hence consider namaz lightly. Thus, it is essential that we are careful of namaz and recite it at awwal waqt. When hadees says that namaz purifies a person from his sins, then it implies that namaz which is recited at the awwal waqt If a person pays attention to it then he will not be inclined towards sins and the whisperings of Shaitan will not have effect upon him.

3. Humility in reciting namaz
Quran has ordered us to be humble and modest at the time of praying namaz. In Surah Mominoon while describing the attributes of a believer, Quran says, ”(The believers are) Those who are humble and meek in their prayers” (Surah Mominoon, v 2)

One form of humility (khuzoo) is the apparent form of namaz as discussed in the manner of namaz shown be Imam Sadiq (a.s). It implies facing the Qibla, standing properly, looking at the place of prostration, proper ruku and sujood.

But the “humility” mentioned in this verse refers to the hidden form of humility It involves paying attention to presence of Allah during our namaz and removing all kinds of worldly thoughts from our mind and paying attention to what we are reciting. And to show humbleness in front of Allah as it ought to be shown.

A person should pay attention to the greatness of Allah so much that tears start rolling down his eyes. It is in fact one of signs of humility during namaz. Narrator asked Imam Sadiq (a.s), Is it proper for a person pretend to cry during namaz? Imam replied, It is very good. Even if (the tears) are equal to the wing of a fly

Hence, even a small number of tears during namaz are a sign of humility.
Wearing neat clothes, putting fragrance, combing the hair etc are highly recommended acts of namaz. Yet, having humility and humbleness during namaz is of paramount importance.

Thus, it is more important to offer namaz with humility and humbleness and that involves paying attention to the zikr of namaz, paying attention to the greatness of Allah, not having worldly thoughts while praying namaz.

Hence, in tonight’s session we have dealt with 3 aspects namaz 1 Importance of namaz 2 Reciting namaz at awwal waqt and leaving all other activities 3 Praying namaz with humility & modesty
O Allah! Destine the zuhoor of Imam Zamana (a.s) in this holy month of Ramazan.
